Collapse of varsity system imminent- ASUU

By Festus Ahon
UGHELLI—DELTA State University chapter of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has said the refusal of the proprietors of public universities across the country to implement the 2009 ASUU/FGN Memo-randum of Under-standing, MoU, may paralyse the university system.

Briefing newsmen, state chapter chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Mordi, warned Federal and state governments on the looming crisis over delay in the imple-mentation of the MoU.

Mordi listed under-funding, low patronage and lack of private sector contributions as some of the problems facing university education in the country.

He insisted that unless the July 2011 agreement was implemented, the university sector would witness unprecedented upheaval that would lead to the total collapse of the system by the end of November 2011.

He said: “University campuses remain in a state of dilapidation. In fact, lecture theatres, lecture halls and students’ hostels are not only inadequate but are in a miserable state of repair.

“Laboratories and workshops are shadows of their former selves, counters and shelves in our laboratories that are supposed to house chemicals and reagents are now playgrounds for rodents.

“It is no wonder many science programmes in our universities are regularly denied accreditation by National Universities Commission, NUC.”
