LAGOS — General Overseer of Church of Foursquare Gospel in Nigeria, Rev. Felix Meduoye, has advised President Goodluck Jonathan to shun the planned removal of subsidy on petroleum products, saying he should instead, concentrate on how to solve the energy problem facing the country.
Rev. Meduoye who spoke, weekend, during the graduation ceremony of 195 students of Life Theological Seminary, Ikorodu, Lagos, said subsidy in itself was something that would create room for corruption, if it is not well managed.
He said: “The President should do what needs to be done. The energy problem is still there. He should focus on that for now. If he thinks that the subsidy he planned to remove will provide funds to tackle the energy crisis, he is probably wrong. Because of the state of our economy and the volatile political atmosphere we have today, the Federal Government should jettison the planned removal of fuel subsidy.
“The government has been subsidizing over the years and the question overtime is: what had the government done with what it had removed? People are getting worried that if it was removed, commodities will be very expensive. People are worried that the subsidy to be removed will go into few individual’s pockets.”
