Borno: Tribunal affirms Shettima’s victory

By Ikechukwu Nnochiri

Sequel to a last minute directive from the acting President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Dalhatu Adamu, Borno State election petition tribunal, sitting in Abuja, Saturday, delivered its judgement.

The tribunal, which affirmed Governor Kashim Shettima of the All Nigerian Peoples Party, ANPP, as the winner of the April 26 governorship election in the state, dismissed the petition that was lodged before it by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as lacking in merit.

PDP , the opposition party in the state, had, alongside its candidate, Mohammed Goni, gone before the tribunal, pleading it to sack the governor from office on the grounds that his election was in violation of the Electoral Act.

Though the tribunal initially held its proceedings in Borno, owing to security situation in the state, it relocated to Abuja.

The tribunal had slated its judgement for Friday. It was, however, barred from doing so by the acting PCA.
