ACN makes case for true federalism

By GBENGA OLARINOYE
OSOGBO— National Chairman of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Chief Bisi Akande, has advised Nigerian politicians to be  educated on the principle of true federalism,  saying the present arrangement is nothing short of unitary system.

Speaking weekend in Offa at the end of a four-day Executive Arm Retreat organised by the government of Osun, Chief Akande said that it was an aberration to describe Nigeria as a Federal Republic.

According to Akande who spoke on “public service revolution”,  “I am appealing to all political leaders all over Nigeria to be better educated about the tenets of cultural democracy otherwise known and called federalism and desist from describing Nigeria as a federal republic when in fact, it is being run as a unitary form of government.”

Until Nigeria becomes truly federal, good governance and efficient service delivery will continue to be an impossible task.”

Also speaking at the ceremony, the national leader of ACN, and the former governor of Lagos state, Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu described Osun state governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as a meticulous leader and an ardent believer in strategic planning, who is also incorruptible, Akande congratulated him for striving fast to bring good governance to the people.

Specifically, Tinubu said the transformation zeal of the governor was borne out of what he described as the tradition he inherited from Lagos which Aregbesola had also improved upon.

The former governor recalled how Aregbesola brought about initiatives which had been critical to the transformation of Lagos especially in the area of financial engineering, which “Aregbesola is employing to raise funds for development projects in Osun.”

Senator Tinubu said this was the same method used in Lagos from 1999 when the Internally Generated Revenue of the state was about N600 million which today stood at over N20billion monthly.

Speaking after the signing ceremony of the declaration, Governor Aregbesola said his coming to Osun was not an accident and urged all political office holders and civil servants to key into the development agenda of his administration.
