Abia govt urged to engage reputable construction firms

By  ERIC UGBOR
ABA—RESIDENTS of Aba, the commercial city of Abia State, have appealed to the state government to engage the services of reputable construction companies in the execution of road contracts  earmarked for rehabilitation in the city this dry season.

The people lamented that most roads executed in the city in previous times did not stand the test of time due to poor work delivery by the contractors.

Many of them cited the two federal roads of Port Harcourt and Owerri roads within Aba which were executed last year by two contractors which are now deplorable barely a year after their construction.

Chief Emmanudel Otueke, Chairman, Assorted Products Dealers Association in Aba, said: “The roads in Aba are bad, and each year, the government embarks on their rehabilitation but the roads fail barely a year after due to poor work by the contractors.”

He stated that the people of Aba needed good network of roads as business people but regretted that “Aba people go through hell during rainy season as virtually all the roads are impassable.”

Chief Otueke stated that currently, “the state government has embarked on demolition of illegal structures with the promise to clear all the drainages and rehabilitate the roads in Aba. We are eager to see the government fulfill this promise.”
