17 die in Bauchi road mishap

Bauchi—No fewer than 17 persons were reported killed while several others sustained injuries, Thursday, in an auto-crash on Azare–Potiskum road in Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The accident, which occurred about 12.35p.m,  involved an 18-seater Toyota commercial bus with number-plate XC 195 KPG and a Peugeot Station wagon 505, with number-plate AE 466 PKM.

Bauchi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Mr. Zakaria Mamman, who confirmed the incident, said of the 32 persons involved in the accident, eight were females, 21 males and three children.

According to him, “the 15 persons injured include seven females, six males and two children, while the 17 dead persons include 15 males, one female and a child.

It was gathered that the accident occurred as a result of dangerous overtaking and overloading.

Mamman, who warned passengers against boarding overloaded vehicles, advised drivers to obey speed limits when driving, saying that, “it is careless overtaking that usually result to the high rates of accidents on our highways.’’

Relatedly, the Sector Commander said four other persons  sustained injuries in separate accidents.

Two persons were injured when their motorcycles collided around the Maiduguri bye-pass, while the second accident happened when two vehicles collided on Dass Road.
