UYO – A primary school pupil in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, has lost his life while two others sustained varying degrees of injuries, when a lawyer, driving a RAV 4 SUV, lost control and ran over the boy.

Other children, retur-ning from school, escaped death by the whiskers. Sympathisers, who arrived the scene, told Vanguard that the lawyer showed little interest in the lives of the accident victims. They said he quickly got in touch with the Police to mobilise to the scene and to forestall relatives of the late boy from setting his car ablaze.

An eyewitness, who spoke on grounds of anonymity, said: “The driver was talking on his phone, when suddenly the vehicle veered off the road and knocked down the boy who died immediately. The boy’s lifeless body was taken to one Okanna Mortuary in Ndiya Etok on same Ikot Ekpene-Ikono Road. A motorcycle rider, with a passenger, who had their limbs broken, were taken to the hospital.

The late boy, Vanguard learnt, had also lost his father. He was an Elementary 6 pupil from Ikot Amba in Obot Akara Local Government Area but resident in Ikot Ekpene with his mother, a farmer, and another brother.

Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Onyeka Orji, urged the people to obey traffic rules, avoid over speeding, and be conscious of pedestrians crossing the roads, parti-cularly school children, during the rush hours.
