Police impound ex-Ondo LP chairman’s official vehicle

AKURE-Men of the Akure Police Headquarters’ have impounded a Toyota Hiace bus belonging to the Ondo State chapter of the Labour Party, LP, from its immediate past chairman, Dr. Olaiya Oni after days of hide and seek game with the police.

Acting on a report from the party secretariat alleging that the chairman refused to release party’s property in his possession, including N4 million naira 14-seater white Toyota Hiace bus after he resigned in a controversial manner from the leadership of the party, the police made to recover the bus, but the chairman put up a resistance.

Luck however ran against the politician yesterday when he was traced to a location where the bus was finally impounded.

Upon interrogation, the former chairman insisted that the vehicle had been sold to him as scrap by the party for N200,000.

Curious enough, a receipt dated two days after the day he quit office was produced by Dr Oni , claiming the bus was a legitimate buy.

This claim was however denied by the leadership of the party which claimed a vehicle of N4million could not have been sold as scrap for N200, 000 within six months of purchase. The party also insisted that at no time did party ratify the sale of any vehicle.

According to the Publicity Secretary of the party, Barr. Femi Okunjemiruwa, the party had made several moves to recover all party properties in Oni’s custody from him to no avail after the former LP Chairman had refused to hand them over to the party since he resigned from office on 14th August 2011.

Okunjemiruwa explained that “after our former Chairman resigned in August, we made several efforts and moves to recover all party properties in his custody, but to no avail and we did not want to take laws into our hands as a law-abiding party.
