First round matches at the Governor’s Cup Futures I served off yesterday at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, with Nigerian players recording a mixed bag of fortunes in their respective singles matches. Rolling off the victory parade was Davis Cup member, Shehu Lawal, who defeated fellow countryman, Clifford Enosoregbe in straight sets of 6-2, 6-1. Kingsley Enosoregbe was next to zoom into the second round of the $15 000 tournament, after overcoming the stiff challenge posed by Sanni Adamu, in two sets of 7-6, 6-4.
Also through to the next round holding tomorrow is Candy Idoko, who outlasted Sunday Emmanuel in three thrilling sets of 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
In the women’s singles, Sarah Adegoke saw of Blessing Samuel in two sets of 6-3, 7-5 but Nigeria’s number one, Fatima Abinu, tasted the bitter pill of defeat against India’s Nidhi Chilumula in three sets of 6-2, 3-6, 3-6. Christy Agugbom was defeated by Croatia’s Silvia Njiric in a straight sets of 1-6, 3-6 while current CBN Open champion, Abiola Akewula was unable to win a point in her 0-6, 0-6 straight sets loss to Anna Floris of Italy .
