London- Tuesday’s Nigeria-Ghana friendly match, which ended goalless at the Vicarage Stadium, Watford, London, recorded a low turnout of Super Eagles’ supporters.
The low turnout was the result of the failure of the Eagles to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria, needing a win to qualify for the African championship, drew 2-2 with Group B leaders Guinea to hand the fellow West African the qualification ticket.
They expressed their disappointment at the performance of the national team and said that that did not encourage them to watch them.
“How do you expect Nigerians to come out here when you are not sure if they will be humiliated again?” asked Iredola Ojo, a football fan.
“After putting all our trust in these boys they went ahead and fumbled. That is why a lot of people did not turn out to cheer them,’’ Ojo added.
Ola Wright, a Nigerian travel tour operator, attributed the low turnout of Nigerians to poor mobilisation and publicity on the part of the organisers.
“Nigerians in London were not fully mobilised. We did not know that these boys were in town except today (Tuesday), when we started looking for how to get tickets for the match.
“Although there was not much support from the London-based Nigerians, the boys tried their best except that luck as usual dealt a terrible blow on them, which led to their in ability to convert their efforts to goals,’’ Wright said.
Adrian Richards, Manager, Arik Airline, London, described the match as exciting. “It was very exciting to watch two very committed and passionate teams.
“After the disappointment of the weekend, the Eagles showed plenty of character and desire.
“They had the best chances on the whole. Ghana had more of the ball possession and noisy supporters,’’ Richards said.
NAN also reports that Ghanaians resident in London, who came in large numbers to cheer their team, the Black Stars, expressed displeasure that they did not score in the match. (NAN)
