Lagos – Fans of the the late Afro beat maestro, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, were thrilled on Wednesday at the African shrine, Agidigbin, Ikeja, Lagos.
A concert entitled “Felabration” was held at the shrine on Wednesday, as part of the one week activities for this year’s remembrance celebration of the musical legend.
Felabration is a yearly concert in celebration of Afrobeat king who died in 1997.
A Businessman, Chinedu Okonkwo, told NAN that he left his business in Onitsha for Lagos to watch this year’s concert.
“I will stay in Lagos for the one-week celebration and visit the shrine everyday. Fela was a musician that was not afraid to criticise the happenings in the society, whether government or individuals.
“I love his music and personality because it touches everything and makes one laugh,” Okonkwo said.
A mechanic, Dapo Martins, said that he always visits the shrine every weekend to listen to Fela’s music aside from the yearly “Felabration”.
“I cannot afford to miss anything Fela. Visiting the shrine is a way to relax after the day’s work. I drink but not too much, and I smoke ‘igbo’ (Indian hemp) too but not much. I do these to imitate Fela”, Martins stated.
Another regular visitor to the shrine, Innocent Agoi, said that the shrine was like a club where people go to relax after the day’s work.
“Fela is an icon, a Nigerian, and African representative in music and arts. That is why, he is recognised worldwide, so he is a legend, and it is good that he is being remembered yearly. I am happy to be here.
“At the shrine, there are varieties of drinks and food. The place is orderly, and there is no harassment,” Agoi said.
He also commended the level of security arrangement at the shrine.
Agoi said, “relaxing in the shrine is okay for me. It is a world on its own”.
Meanwhile, inside the shrine, at the left hand corner was an inscription, “No usage of Drugs”.
This year “Felabration” was convened by Yeni Kuti, Fela’s first daughter. (NAN)
