FCTA to demolish Nyanya labour camp

By Paul Odenyi

Abuja—The Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, says that the Nyanya Labour camp in Abuja will  be demolished soon in line with the report of the UN Habitat, which described the area as unfit for human habitation.

Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Minister, Senator  Bala Mohammed, said   yesterday in Abuja at a stakeholders meeting to review the UN Habitat report on the camp that 10,000 residents of the camp will be properly resettled.

Nyanya camp  in a suburb of the FCT, was constructed in the early 80s to accommodate construction workers who began the development of Abuja upon the relocation of the federal capital from Lagos. There are other camps owned by the construction giant, Julius Berger in Kubwa and Mpape areas of the FCT.

The Minister however, assured that the demolition of the camp would not take place until an enumeration of the more than 10,000 residents and proper modalities for their resettlement were concluded.

The enumeration, he said, would enable the administration consider the original occupants first in allocating newly  constructed houses.
