ABAKALIKI – WIFE of Ebonyi State governor, Mrs. Josephine Elechi, has called on local government area chairmen in the country to commit their resources towards the treatment and reduction of maternal morbidity in the country.
Mrs. Elechi, who pointed out that maternal morbidity occurred mostly in rural areas, enjoined council executives to work hand in hand with their people at the local government level to ensure effective monitoring and treatment of health-related cases that often affected women.
The governor’s wife, who was represented by wife of the deputy
governor of the state, Mrs. Rachael Umahi, made the call in Ezza North local government area during the campaign on the reduction of maternal morbidity in the state.
She said the state government through her pet project, Mother and Child Care Initiative, MCCI, had put in place a machinery at both the state and rural levels to ensure that the health of women, especially pregnant ones, were given appropriate medical attention.
In a remark, the chairman of Ezza North local government area, Mr. Ikeuwa Omebeh, stated that despite all the measures put in place by the government to achieve adequate health standard, especially for rural dwellers, the health sector was still bedevilled by myriads of challenges in the areas of maternal morbidity.
