Yobe: Sober reflection

By Bala Ajiya

YOBE State celebrated 100 days of Governor Gaidam’s second tenure with a sober reflection as the Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Gaidam was on a lesser Hajj in Saudi Arabia and the usual ceremony which accompany such occasions was missing.

On his inauguration on May 29, 2011, Gaidam had reiterated his commitment to good governance, accountability and the rule of law for the peace and progress of the state.

And 100 days after, Gaidam appears on the road to fulfilling his promises. He has embarked on a host of projects to realise his ideas.

In the area of healthcare delivery the governor has kept his promise of upgrading health institutions. He introduced a policy of free medical services for children under five years and post natal and antenatal services for nursing and pregnant mothers throughout the state.

In public works, Governor Gaidam is building roads and drainages in all local government areas across the three senatorial zones while Damaturu the state capital has continued to receive a face lift through provision of street lights, beautification of roundabouts and construction of ring roads which serve as a bye_pass so that heavy trucks do no have to pass through the city centre.

His administration has also started building housing estates to provide homes for the ever increasing population.

Gaidam’s absence during the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the creation of the state and his 100 days in office deprived the citizenry the opportunity of hearing from the chief executive his achievements so far.

However, the governor has recorded some mileage in delivery of democracy dividends. Currently, about 60 boreholes are serviceable in Damaturu and more are being drilled in other areas. The government has also reached an agreement with the organized labour on the payment of N18,000 minimum wage.
