Probe Fugu’s assassination- CNPP

By Tony Edike

ENUGU- Conference of Nigerian Political Parties, CNPP, Sunday, condemned the killing of Babakura Alhaji Fugu, brother-in-law of the late leader of Boko Haram, Yusuf Mohammed, two days after his meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The group called on President Goodluck Jonathan to urgently set up a public inquiry to unravel those responsible for Fugu’s death since Boko Haram has denied responsibility for the attack.

The Borno State Police Commissioner, Mr. Simeon Midenda, said while confirming Saturday’s attack on Fugu that “the gunman pulled a Kalashnikov rifle from inside the folds of his traditional robes and shot Fugu to death. No one else was wounded in the attack and the gunman apparently walked away.”

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, the CNPP said the call for the probe of Babakura Fugu’s death was based on the fact that “Boko Haram has denied the killing; their antecedents indicate that they don’t take prisoners; and Fugu was about to grant interview to international media before his death.”

The group said Chief Obasanjo and Senator Ali Sherrif should as patriots furnish the panel with necessary evidence to stop the Boko Haram insurgency.
