Nigeria’s Under-23 team coach Austin Eguavoen has described as interesting the draw that pitches his team against Morocco, Algeria and Senegal in the final qualifying tournament for next year’s Olympics.
Nigeria’s Dream Team V, as the country’s Olympic team are called, are drawn in a relatively easier group than hosts Egypt, who have to take on Cote d’Ivoire, South Africa and Gabon.
“The draw is interesting. Like I have always said no team is a minnow in Africa football. This is only a pointer that we should begin preparations in earnest,” said Eguavoen.
“It would also give us a direction on the choice of Africa friendly matches to pursue. But honestly it’s an interesting draw.”
Nigeria won an historic Olympic Gold in 1996 and were beaten in the final of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.
The championship will be on a round-robin basis with the top two from each group advancing to the semi-finals.
The top three placed teams automatically qualify for the London 2012 Olympic Games whilst the fourth placed team will engage a team from Asia in a playoff.
The qualifiers kick off November 26 to climax on December 10.
London 2012 Olympic Games will take place from July 27 to August 12, 2012.
