Nigeria in top three of Android contest

By Charles Mgbolu

The Android Developer Challenge for Sub-Saharan Africa, an online competition has taken place, with Team Nigeria coming out in the top three.

The country was represented by a team called Fans Connect online and had beaten hundreds of competing teams from other African nations to clinch the first prize in the entertainment software category.

Fans Connect had created an Android-enabled software called Afrinolly to bring African movies to your pocket, allowing users to watch movie trailers, read entertainment news and gossip, track celebs, listen to music and share it all with friends on Android enabled cell phones.

According to organizers, the competition is meant to encourage the development of exciting, high quality applications that can delight mobile users in Africa and around the world.

Developers in Sub-Saharan Africa submitted applications across three broad categories: apps related to entertainment, media and games; apps related to social networking and communication; and apps related to productivity, tools, and local and geo services.

A Google representative said “In July, we announced the top 29 applications, provided them new phones, mentoring from Google’s and six weeks to improve their applications. From those 29, we have chosen three.”
