Ex-militants protest in Imo

By CHIDI NKWOPARA, Owerri

Angry ex-militants, numbering over 100 staged a peaceful demonstration in Owerri to protest what they termed “inexplicable dissolution of the State Amnesty Committee by the present administration”.

They were particularly irked that the Special Assistant, SA, Mr. Eric Nwanom, has infiltrated the youth body and politicized the amnesty programme.

The angry youths, who carried placards with varying inscriptions, threatened a showdown with the government if there was any delay in the expected time of disbursing the federal government’s allowances due to them.

Speaking in an interview, one of the leaders of the protesting ex-militants, General Amaechi Amebo, recalled that Emeka Igwe and Andrew Nwokejigbo, whose committee was dissolved by government, personally visited the camps to persuade the militants to lay down their arms.

Reacting, Nwanom not only denied the allegations but also added that those who demonstrated were not bona fide members of the amnesty programme.

“The dissolution of the amnesty committee was done in good faith. I have the statistical data of all genuine members of the amnesty programme”, Nwanom explained.
