Delta govt backs NDLEA on drug war

By Albert Akpor
LAGOS—Delta State Government has pledged to assist the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, in the agency’s determination to eradicate illicit drug trafficking in the country.

The state government promised the agency land on which to build an office complex. The deputy governor of the state, Prof Amos Utuama, SAN, gave the assurance while receiving Director-General of NDLEA, Mr. Femi Ajayi, and other members of the delegation during an advocacy visit to the state government in Asaba.

The visit, Vanguard gathered, was to seek the state government’s assistance in the on-going fight against illicit drugs trafficking.

Ajayi, who commended the state for the reception accorded him and members of his delegation, said: “The agency is here to seek the co-operation of the state government and other stakeholders in the state. We cannot fight and win this battle alone. Your support will go a long way in assisting the NDLEA.”

Utuama praised the agency for its relentless fight against trafficking in hard drugs and lamented poor funding of the anti-drug outfit.

He said: “I sympathise with the agency because of your deficit budget, lack of vehicles, inadequate fire arms and other constraints. It is also commendable that your voice is still strong, which is an indication that you are dedicated to your jobs.”
