University of Calabar (UNICAL) was yesterday shut after students violently protested alleged death of three colleagues on campus as a result of insecurity.
The authorities closed the institution for two weeks, asking the students to vacate the campus immediately.
According to the students, insecurity in the university led to the killing of two of their colleagues by armed robbers on campus.
They said the robbery attack came two weeks after a final year law student was killed on campus by unknown persons suspected to be cultists.
The registrar, Dr. Julia Omang, in a statement said the university authorities rose from a meeting yesterday with a decision that the students must ‘vacate’ the campus immediately.
“At an emergency meeting of the management of the University of Calabar held this morning August 27 2011, a decision was taken for students to proceed on a two week mid-semester break. Accordingly, students should vacate the campus before 12 noon. All students should ensure compliance with this directive.”
