Late Admiral Augustus Akhubue Aikhomu has been described as a man who worked for Nigeria without wearing airs. That is the verdict of former Abia state governor Orji Uzor Kalu who payed him a glowing tribute, Kalu described Aikhomu as the man who made compatriots happy through the Super Eagles.
Also, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the death of former Vice President Augustus Aikhomu is another great loss to Nigeria, considering the deceased’s nation-building roles while he served the country. Atiku said in a statement in Abuja by his media office that Aikhomu’s contributions to the stability of the country cannot be forgotten so soon.

, Dr Emmanuel in his condolence expressed shock at the sudden death of the naval chief at a time when the country needed wise and elderly counsel to forge ahead in unity and love.
According to him, late Aikhomu was not only dedicated, diligent and faithful to his professional calling (the Armed Forces) but to the country which he served at the topmost level.
The Governor eulogized Aikhomu for his loyalty and commitment to a united Nigeria as exhibited in his firm believe in one indivisible Nigeria.”
In his tribute, former Governor of Old Bendel State, Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia said the disciplined career of late former Vice Admiral Augustus Aikhomu would serve as a lesson for younger officers to emulate.
In a statement he made available to journalists yesterday, Ogbemudia described Aikhomu’s death as an institutional loss to Nigeria Navy and a personal loss to former Military President Ibrahim Babangida under whom the deceased served as number two citizen, stressing that his death was a fresh occasion for everyone to collectively challenge the rampaging scourge of cancer in the society.
According to him, ‘’ I received with great sadness the news of the death of Admiral Augustus Aikhomu. Iam saddened because Augustus always exuded buoyant health each time we met and his death is a fresh occasion for us to collectively challenge the rampaging scourge of cancer in our society.”
While also paying tribute, governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State expressed sadness at the demise of former Chief of General Staff and Military Vice President, Admiral Augustus Akhabue Aikhomu saying that the nation has lost a one of its more patriotic and humane statesmen.
Chime said that the ex naval chief till his passage remained committed to the ideal of building a united and prosperous nation adding that his death came at a time when the country needed wise and elderly counsels to forge ahead.
In the same vein same, Chief Emeka Anyaoku described the late Admiral Augustus Aikhomu as an illustrious and faithful servant.
“ His service as the number two in our military government was a remarkable example of patriotism and commitment to our country. It was Admiral Aikhomu who led the Nigerian delegation to the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Kualalumpur in 1989 at which I was elected Commonwealth Secretary-General. I remember vividly the great joy he expressed when his compatriot defeated a former Australian Prime Minister in the competition for the post. May The Almighty comfort his family and grant our prayer that his soul will rest in perfect peace.”
