PORT HARCOURT – A Kidnap kingpin serving a 20-year jail term was among those apprehended on Sunday morning, when inmates of the Port Harcourt prisons attempted to escape,the police have said.

Confirming the escape of five inmates, the state Police Command, said investigation was on to unravel details of the jailbreak incident.

 According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Ben Ugwuegbulam,about 10 of the inmates who escaped initially but five of them were later apprehended and brought back to the prisons.

He said: “at the end of the head count, it was discovered that five had not been accounted for and presumed escaped, while Ebilate John, a kidnap kingpin, serving 20 years was apprehended by the Police and returned to the prison, bringing total rearrested jail breakers to three and two convicted for kidnapping and one awaiting trial. 23 others were earlier arrested over attempt to escape.”
