Police parade 7 suspected car thieves

AKURE—POLICE in Ondo State yesterday, paraded a Mechanical Engineering graduate of University of Ilorin, and six others for allegedly snatching posh vehicles from several car hire companies across the nation.

Tayo a 2010 graduate who claimed to be a native of Akure and the son of a school principal said that he was introduced into the business by one of his late friends.

According to him, he successfully snatched seven cars before he was apprehended by the police in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State two weeks ago.

Cars recovered from the gang include two Honda Accord End of Discussion, Audi AG, Honda CRV Sports Utility Van, Honda Accord Bullet and Nissan Primera.

Giving insight into the gang’s mode of operations, the state Police Commissioner, Sani Mogagi, said the university graduate would pose as a chief executive of a big firm and approach car hire companies for their service.

Mogagi noted that after payment and a posh car released to him with a driver, the gang would lay ambush and snatch the car from the driver.

According to him, after snatching the car, the driver would be dropped and the chief suspect would take over the car and drive it to a car dealer who will buy it from him.

The university graduate, the Commissioner said was arrested in his Ijebu Ode’s hide out by detectives from the Anti Robbery Squad, Akure.

He said the gang had been on police surveillance for the past two months in connection with various snatched cars in Akure..

The Commissioner added that three members of the gang were equally involved in armed robbery on Akure-Ilesha Expressway.

Items recovered from them according to him, included three locally made guns and six cartridges.
