Machina (Yobe) More than 182 residents of Machina, Yobe, were on Wednesday rendered homeless following a flood which submerged their homes and farmlands.
The flood followed a down pour which caused considerable damage as the drains constructed could not check the heavy flow of water.
Further reports that the Yobe State Emergency Relief Agency had so far distributed N3 million to 182 victims of the flood.
Alhaji Gambo Bizi, Executive Secretary of the agency, said that the fund was to provide immediate relief to the victims.
Bizi, who said the victims were given between N10,000 and N50,000 depending on the degree of damage and loss of property, urged the victims to make judicious use of the fund.
Meanwhile, victims of the flood, who have been recounting their ordeals, have appealed to the Federal Government to support the state government in providing relief to victims.
Ali Waziri, a displaced resident, said: “I have lost my house, farm and livestock to the flood; I am starting a new life.
“ The federal government should come to our aid. The drainage system in Machina is not good enough to contain the rain water from the rocks and upland areas.”
Another resident, Alhaji Isyaku Machina, said that he lost all his belongings, adding that the four rooms in his compound collapsed in the flooding incident.
“My three wives and children escaped and are now taking refuge in different locations,” he said. (NAN)
