The importance of Information and Communications Technology, ICT, to the national development has once again been reiterated.
It was in realization of this role that the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, initiated ICT4 development programme to ensure that all the parastatals and agencies of the ministry understand the role of ICT and how they can use it in their operations to grow the economy.
The Director General, Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi, FIIRO, Mrs Gloria Elemo in a chat with reporters in Lagos recently, disclosed that ICT has played a very key role in research development in Nigeria. According to her, information technology is now used as barometer to measure the growth and development of countries of the world.
“The use of ICT in research can not be overemphasized. It has assisted us in the level of progress we have made at FIIRO. ICT has become so useful that it is now used in the clarification of development of countries. Today, you discovered that the development of most countries is measured by the level to which their infrastructure and ICT have grown”, she explained.
Mrs Elemo said they are working hard towards meeting the acceptable level of ICT development to enable them get closer to the realization of the vision 20:2020 of the federal government.
We at FIIRO, we realised that there is nothing you can do that is not globally connected and that’s where ICT comes in”, she said adding that they were given a mandate by the Minister of Science and Technology to ensure that they are compliant with the ICT 4 development plan of action.
