LAWYERS and licensed Customs agents yesterday besieged the office of the Federal Operations Unit ( F . O .U ) of the Nigeria Customs Service to effect the bail of their clients,friends and family members who who were arrested along with touts raided by the officers of the service last in Apapa.
It would be recalled that the management of the Tin-Can Island Port Customs Command ordered for a raid of the notorious anyman canteen which resulted in the arrest of over 200 suspected touts.
The suspected touts were later distributed to different Police station across the state as lawyers and agents had a hectic time locating the station where people were detained
Some of the lawyers and agents who spoke to Vanguard said that they arrived the office of the F O U U as early as 7 a m and applied for bail of their client as directed by Customs but complained that despite meeting all bail condition, their clients are yet to be released.
They stated that their clients’ fundamental rights have been trampled upon as they ought to have been released and charged to court if any charge has been brought against them.
Barr Dadi Mannap who has been efforts to get the release in the last three days condemned the Customs action on the matter of arrested and not allowing for bail after 24 hours.
He explained that there fundamentals of criminal procedure adding that bail is one of the fundamental of the procedure.
“The suspectes were arrested on the 10th of August and and up till now I speak with you my client is still being held by the Customs, are they the Police, I think somebody needs to call these people to order” Mannap stated.
