Adamawa Police command intensifies effort on crime control

•Kills six armed robbers, recovers arms, ammunition

The crime control strategy put in place by the Adamawa state police command has begun to yield positive results with the recently killing of six armed robbers and recovery of arms and ammunition.

Reports say residents of the state are also heaving a sigh of releaf as the heavy presence of men of the dreaded anti-robbery squad are spotted combing all nooks and cranny of the state with a view to ridding the state crime and criminality. Sources said it was during one of such raids on criminal hideouts that six notorious armed robbers said to have terrorized residents for some time now were gunned down in a fierce encounter.

The state Police Commissioner Mr. Aderenle Shinaba who was visibly proud of the recent breakthrough disclosed to newsmen while parading the gunned down suspects on Thursday, in Yola, that the robbery syndicate had been terrorizing innocent citizens in Yola metropolis and its environs adding that the Police had been on their manhunt.

The state police boss said it was part of the efforts of the command to stem the tide of crime rate in the state hence the need for members of the public to give useful information to the command that would help the police in their efforts to rid the state of all forms of crimes. He assured that such information would be treated with high degree of confidentiality.

CP Shinaba said, “On 10th August, 2011 at about 5pm the police was tipped that a syndicate would be operating along Mayo_Belwa zing road, hence men of the command swing into action along with the men of Ali Kwara, who gunned down some members of the syndicate. On getting to the spot, the armed robbers opened fire on my men who responded accordingly and killed two of them. The third person, a driver identified as Mohammed Adamu “M” alias Number Six was arrested.” he said.

The driver, was said to have informed the police that he had been recruited to transport arms for the gang of the armed robbers and that the gang would operate within Mayo_Belwa Zing axis and was carried long to the spot.

However, as he was about escaping, he was shot down by Alhaji Ali Kwara’s men who were approaching the scene, probably on sighting members of the said syndicate that had recruited him.

Items recovered by the police included three AK 47 riffles, 4 magazine with 2 paint in police colours, two hundred and five (205 round of live ammunitions and one pouch green in colour bag.

In a similar development, another armed robbery suspect was gunned down by policemen attached to the command, having attacked the security guard at the MTN station at Gurin along with a syndicate that had escaped. Police said efforts were on to tracking down fleeing members of the syndicate.

The command also disclosed that men of the police had reduced the rate of armed robbery in Toungo local government area of the state as the police had kept surveillance of the area noted to one of the most vulnerable areas in the state. Meanwhile, the police have recovered a bodiless head of a suspected armed robbery victim while a manhunt has been launched against a robbery kingpin named Garba suspected whose gang is said to be terrorising the state.

The police further disclosed that a man identified as Vahyala Tumba in Michika has killed his wife in a yet to be ascertained circumstance. Sensing the gravity of his offence, the man in an apparent bid to avert justice reportedly stabbed himself with the same knife in an attempt to commit suicide but was rushed to the hospital where he is said to be responding to treatment.
