A THIRTY eight-year-old woman is recipeint of the first successful kidney transplantation surgery at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
Disclosing the feat to the media last week, Chief Medical Director of the tertiary Health institution, Prof. Akin Oshibogun said the patient was doing very well clinically after the procedure which was carried out last Tuesday.
In a statement, Oshibogun, who was elated at the development noted:”With this feat, LUTH is enabled to join the likes of AKTH, OAUTHC, UCH and St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos where similar surgeries have been carried out over the years.
“The Board and Management of LUTH appreciates the immense support of the Federal ministry of Health which enabled the hospital to acquire the necessary technology and expertise to be able to arrive at this point today.”
Further, the CMD said with the addition of LUTH to the number of hospitals capable of performing this surgery. It is hoped that Nigerians with end stage kidney disorders requiring renal transplantation will have improved access to services in an environment that is culturally acceptable and at a price that is more affordable to them.”
Over the years, LUTH has been a major renal dialysis centre and scores of renal failure patients in various stages of renal failure, throng the hospital daily in search of the life-saving healthcare services
The latest development is in line with the drive of the health facility to ensure availability of super specilaity health services.
