ENUGU—THREE police men on guard duty at the headquarters of Enugu State Broadcasting Service, ESBS, have been detained by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS of the state police command over Thursday’s armed robbery incident in which the sum of N1,437,545.10 meant for the payment of casual staff of the station was snatched.
Also detained in connection with the incident are the Accounts Officer of the station, Mrs. Anne Uzoamaka Obi, who brought the money from the bank, a driver and some private security staff who were on duty at the time the two armed robbers operating on a motorcycle stormed the premises.
Sources said the Accounts Officer and the driver had gone to the bank at about 10.30 am on Thursday to withdraw the money but immediately they returned to the ESBS headquarters and moved the money into the Accounts Department, the two armed men suspected to have trailed them from the bank, accosted the woman and dispossessed her of the money at gunpoint.
As they made their way out of the station, the bandits shot into the air trice apparently to scare the security men and the staff.
A management staff of the station told SaturdayVanguard yesterday that the three policemen on duty at the time of the incident allegedly left their duty post and were chatting with some staff inside the office complex hence they could not confront the armed robbers who sped off with the bag containing the money.
Suspecting a fowl play, the ESBS management invited the SARS operatives who arrested the three armed cops including two corporals and a constable, the private security men, the Accounts Officer and the driver and detained them at the station where they are now being quizzed.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the report yesterday, said that the matter had been referred to SARS for investigation, adding that many people had been picked up for questioning to determine whether the robbery was arranged or not.
Meanwhile another set of three policemen led by an Inspector had been deployed to the station to maintain security in the area.
Armed robbers operating on fast moving motorcycles had been on rampage in Enugu capital city recently dispossessing their victims of money, phone sets and other valuables, but security men hardly apprehend them because of their style of operation.
