Edo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Iziegbe Anita Evbuomwan, has attributed the state’s victory at the 17th National Sports Festival to the unflinching support of the Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
According to the Commissioner, ‘It would have been practically impossible for the state to come out tops, but for the encouragement we got from our sports loving Governor. He ensured that the welfare of the athletes was adequately met.
Describing the 46Gold, 41Silver and 43Bronze medals third position win as well deserving, the Commissioner stressed that Edo State did not engage in any form of malpractice throughout the festival.
“I did not spend one kobo in bribing; neither did the state engage in poaching. Unlike most states that used professionals, as well as poached athletes from other states, Edo followed the festival guidelines to the letter and I am happy we have proven our worth by finishing among the first three”, Hon Evbuomwan said
While commending the athletes, especially those who rejected cash offers from other states to betray Edo, the Commissioner noted that their loyalty is most appreciated, adding that the state will not relent in its efforts of rewarding medalists.
“It is our tradition to absorb athletes who won medals during festival to offer them the opportunity to grow as well as enable them earn decent living,” Hon Evbuomwan noted.
