Oshiomhole congratulates contingent, gives N5m

Obviously pleased  with the outing of Edo state contingent to the 17th National Sports Festival, in Rivers State, the Governor Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has offered the contingent the sum of five million naira (N5million) describing the state’s third position as worth celebrating.

The Governor, who spoke at the reception of the Nojim Maiyegun third position trophy won by Edo state, said with delight that Edo actually won the first position at the festival by their conduct, noting that the state did not engage in malpractices.

‘It is unhelpful for states to manipulate, procure athletes that are not in their regular employment or even induce officials in order to occupy positions they do not merit’. The governor stressed

According to the him, ‘I am pleased with your performance at the festival; In terms of investment per medal, I know we spent far less than most states, but we have the goodwill and I hope we will do better in subsequent festivals so as to reclaim our glory in sports’.

While approving the sum of five million naira to the contingent in appreciation of their performance, the governor promised to ensure that the N10million won by the state contingent at the end of the games is released.

Commissioner for Sports, Hon Iziegbe Anita Evbuomwan lauded the Governor for being among the few state governors that attended the opening ceremony of the Garden City Games.

Hon Evbuomwan noted that the sponsorship of the state’s contigent to the Sports festival, coupled with the sponsorship of the National U-23 matches international matches in the recent past has buttressed the love he, Comrade Governor had for sports.

‘Edo participated in 24 out of 25 sports at the games and won a total of 46 gold, 41 silver and 43 bronze medals, placing third behind Rivers and Delta states respectively’, The Commissioner said.
