IBADAN— Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has charged the three tiers of governments to put in place incentives that will attract youths to agriculture to boost food production in the country.
At the inauguration of ‘Feed Africa committee’ by the Centre for Human Security in Ibadan, the former President said, “we must make farming profitable by making incentives available to interested youths. Incentives must be given in the areas of land available to the interested youths and graduates of agriculture.
They must have access to loans and have specialized training on the kind of crops to grow. After these have been provided, they must be sure that there is a market for their produce. It is worrisome when one takes a look at the declining number of farmers in the country and the apathy youths show to farming.”
“Farmers have not been treated well in Nigeria. The problem now is how to build a successor generation of farmers. This is a great challenge now in Nigeria”.
Speaking, Director of Center for Human Security, Prof Peter Okebukola, tasked governments at various levels to formulate and implement agriculture friendly policies in order to eradicate poverty.
