ABUJA-Minister of Education, Prof Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i has called on National Mathematical Centre, NMC, to take immediate steps to simplify the teaching of Mathematics in the country to engender the interest of students.
Prof. Rufa’i identified poor perception and teaching method as largely responsible for the lack of interest in the subject by students, stressing that Mathematics is a ‘’Must Pass Subject” for every student hence the need to arouse their interest through improved teaching methods.
The minister spoke while receiving the Chief Executive of NMC, Prof. Sam Ale who was on a courtesy call to congratulate her on her re-appointment.
According to her, “President Goodluck Jonathan and indeed the Federal Ministry of Education are keen on proper understanding of Mathematics as a major tool for the study of other subjects” and assured of the continued support of the Federal Government to the centre”.
The Minister urged the leadership of the NMC to come up immediately with achievable targets for the next 100 days which would be incorporated in the larger plan being developed by the Ministry in line with the Education Roadmap, One Year Strategy Plan and recommendations of various Committees.
