Calabar—Senate President David Mark has described the legislative arm of government as the weakest arm that suffers more when democracy comes under attack by the military incursion.
Senate President, who stated this when he commissioned the ultra- modern complex of the Cross River State House of Assembly, weekend, noted that though the arm was the nearest to the grassroots, when there is military incursion, it was always the first to be sacked.
“It is a known fact that we are the weakest and first to be attacked any time our democracy is derailed. We are the weakest and nearest to the grassroots, so at the end of the day, any time there is an attack on democracy, we, the legislators, are the first to be sacked.
The Senate President said the legislative arm had moved from the era of meeting late at night and impeaching the Speaker or Governor to legislating for good governance to ensure that the benefit of democracy was felt by the people.
“I think as long as democracy matures, people will get to understand the important role the legislature plays. Indeed, it will not be an over statement if I say that the legislature is the engine house of democracy,” he said.
According to him, the first few years of democracy in the present political dispensation was turbulent as there were constant disagreement between the executive and legislature, stressing that “now, I think, we are on track.”
