Labour raises alarm over illegal activities of oil firms

LAGOS – MARITIME Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, weekend raised alarm over alleged illegal activities of some oil companies and shipping agents in midstream operations and private jetties stressing  that were injurious to the nation.

The union said contrary to the government’s directive that they, the Nigeria Ports Authority, NPA, appointed stevedore must be allowed into any vessel that berthed midstream  or offshore, some  oil companies had been sneaking in, discharging  vessels and sneaking out with a lot of unwholesome activities.

President-General of MWUN, Mr. Anthony Nted, in a statement lamented that the affected oil companies in connivance with some  shipping agents had been undermining the nation’s economy in the offshore and private jetties.

Nted who is also a Vice President of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, called on President Goodluck Jonathan to order NPA to live up to expectations by  enforcing the rule that a stevedore must be allowed into any vessel that berthed midstream.
