OWERRI — DOCTORS at Imo State University Teaching Hospital, IMSUTH, Orlu, are battling to save the life of a 24-year-old cripple, Mr. Onyekachi Unuaka, who was shot by unidentified gunmen.
The hoodlums, who stormed their victim’s Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area home, reportedly shot him in his face.
Family sources said Onyekachi was sleeping when the gunmen entered his room, adding that he heard a knock on his door and opened because he was not suspecting that anybody was after him.
“He was immediately shot in his face, destroying his nose, eyes and mouth in the process. The hoodlums hurriedly ran away, thinking that they had accomplished their assignment,” they recounted with grief.
Confirming Onyekachi’s ordeal, IMSUTH Chief Medical Director, Dr. Alexander Chukwulebe, appealed to government and philanthropists to come to his aid, stressing that a lot needed to be done to save his life.
“The patient needs over N500,000 to enable him undergo more surgical operations, as well as defray the cost of drugs. I wonder why his relations abandoned the victim who does not have a father in hospital,” Chukwulebe said.
