The continental competition means many South American stars have yet to sort out where they will be playing next season – and that’s blocking movement in Spain, Italy and England
The new football season is already looming and for some clubs, it has actually already started with European qualifying matches. But with the big kick-off just over a month away for most sides on the continent, there is still much rebuilding to be done.
While sides such as Real Madrid and Malaga have already conducted business this summer, many other major teams in Europe are still posturing as the transfer season has yet to reach full frenzy. And it is unlikely to do so until the conclusion of a continental competition currently being disputed in Argentina: the Copa America.
So far, despite huge interest, none of the influential South American players based on the continent or in Europe have made a move this summer. Here, Goal.com looks at the 10 biggest deals that are holding up the market and that are set to produce something of a domino effect in terms of transfers once the Copa America is over.
SERGIO AGUERO (Argentina & Atletico Madrid)
Age: 23
Position: Forward
10-11 season: 41 appearances (27 goals)
Price: €45 million
Interested clubs: Real Madrid, Man City, Juventus
Sergio Aguero announced his desire to leave Atletico Madrid at the end of last season, but the Argentina forward is still waiting to sort out his future. Real Madrid appeared favorites to seal his signature, but its interest has cooled. Manchester City remain in the running, while Juventus appear to have baulked at the player’s €45m transfer fee. The 23-year-old’s father admitted this week that he may even stay at Atletico, with Aguero himself stating: “My future will be decided after the Copa America.”
RADAMEL FALCAO (Colombia & Porto)
Age: 25
Position: Striker
10-11 season: 42 appearances (39 goals)
Price: €30m
Interested clubs: Chelsea, Real Madrid
Radamel Falcao enjoyed a hugely impressive campaign with Porto as the Portuguese side collected three trophies, including the Europa League, under Andre Villas-Boas. The coach has since moved to Chelsea and Falcao, who scored both goals as Colombia beat Bolivia 2-0 on Sunday, is set to follow his former boss. “I like Spain,” he said, “But I prefer the Premier League.” Colombia have progressed to the quarter-finals as group winners, meaning talk of the player’s future will be put on hold until after the country’s campaign has come to an end.
DIEGO FORLAN (Uruguay & Atletico Madrid)
Age: 32
Position: Forward
Last season: 42 appearances (10 goals)
Price: €10m
Interested clubs: Galatasaray, Besiktas, Tottenham
Diego Forlan’s time at Atletico Madrid appears to be coming to an end. Forlan was an integral part of the side that claimed the Europa League in 2009-10, but fell out of favor with coach Quique Sanchez Flores last season and was restricted to a bit-part role in the latter part of the campaign. Sanchez Flores has since vacated the Vicente Calderon, but Atletico still seem keen to move the striker on due to his high wages. Forlan has affirmed that he wants to stay, but believes the club want him out after the Copa America. “I am fine there [at Atletico],” he said. “I have been listening to rumours that the club are interested in my exit, [but] I am very calm.”
GANSO (Brazil & Santos)
Age: 21
Position: Attacking midfielder
Last season: 43 appearances (13 goals)
Price: €30 million
Interested clubs: AC Milan, Inter
Much of the talk in this transfer window has concerned Real Madrid target Neymar, but the forward’s Santos and Brazil teammate Ganso has also gathered glowing reports. The attacking midfielder has attracted interest from a number of clubs in Europe, with AC Milan leading the chase for the player’s signature. For now, though, the Brazilian claims he is focused on his national side. “Perhaps I’ll think about playing in Europe later,” he said earlier this week. “Now, my mind is completely on the Copa America.” Milan now look favorites to land the 21-year-old after Inter’s interest cooled.
GIOVANI DOS SANTOS (Mexico & Tottenham)
Age: 22
Position: Forward
Last season: 21 appearances (5 goals)
Price: €6m
Interested clubs: Sevilla, Zaragoza, Udinese
Giovani dos Santos has endured a miserable time for Tottenham since moving to White Hart Lane from Barcelona in 2008, but the young forward’s form with Mexico is consistently excellent and he now looks certain to move on this summer. Gio scored a brilliant goal for Mexico as El Tri beat United States to win the Gold Cup last month, and is also playing for his country at the Copa America, which is unlikely to please Spurs coach Harry Redknapp. “I still don’t know where I am going but thank God things are going well now and I have some offers,” the player said recently.
NEYMAR (Brazil & Santos)
Age: 19
Position: Forward
Last season: 60 appearances (42 goals)
Price: €45m
Interested clubs: Real Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona
Neymar recently helped Santos win the Copa Libertadores and the Brazil forward has been linked with a move all summer long. His club recently claimed that no less than five clubs had met the player’s €45 million valuation, with Real Madrid favorites to sign the exciting young forward. Barcelona is also interested, according to Neymar’s agent, but the player’s preference is to join Madrid and Jose Mourinho’s side have been given permission to negotiate. However, no announcement is likely to be made while he is in action with Brazil. “He will decide his future after the Copa America,” the player’s father said last week.
JAVIER PASTORE (Argentina & Palermo)
Age: 22
Position: Attacking midfielder
Last season: 41 appearances (14 goals)
Price: €30m
Interested clubs: Real Madrid, Chelsea, Napoli, Malaga
Pastore is attracting interest from half of the clubs in Europe at the moment, with a host of sides said to be scrapping for the youngster’s services. Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini has claimed the club have already received a huge €50m bid for its star player and says Pastore has just a 10 per cent chance of staying at the Sicilian side. The 22-year-old, though, is unwilling to discuss a move at the moment. “My future will be decided after the Copa America,” he said. “At the moment I am focused on Argentina.”
ALEXIS SANCHEZ (Chile & Udinese)
Age: 22
Position: Forward
Last season: 32 appearances (12 goals)
Price: €40m
Interested clubs: Barcelona, Manchester City, Juventus
Alexis Sanchez has his heart set on a move to Barcelona and the Chile forward is determined to get his way, despite difficulties in negotiations between the Catalans and his current club, Udinese. Sanchez reportedly made a promise to his late uncle that he would move to Barca and recently rejected an approach from Manchester City. Chile coach Claudio Borghi gave Sanchez permission to fly back to Europe ahead of the Copa America to sign for the Catalan giants, but no agreement was reached and the European champions will now have to wait until after the tournament’s conclusion in order to thrash out a deal for the 22-year-old.
CARLOS TEVEZ (Argentina & Manchester City)
Age: 27
Position: Forward
Last season: 39 appearances (23 goals)
Price: €56m
Interested clubs: Real Madrid, Inter, Boca Juniors
Carlos Tevez is unhappy at Manchester City and wants to leave. The Argentina forward rarely stays at a club for long and recently declared his intention to move on once again, citing family reasons. However, a transfer to either Spain or Italy could see his daughters relocate from Argentina and former club Boca Juniors couldn’t afford him anyway. City has said the player will not be allowed to leave and have placed a prohibitive fee of €56m on his head, meaning any possible move will require negotiation between the two parties after the Copa America.
ARTURO VIDAL (Chile & Bayer Leverkusen)
Age: 24
Position: Midfielder
Last season: 35 appearances (11 goals)
Price: €15m
Interested clubs: Bayern, Milan, Juve, Inter
Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Arturo Vidal has attracted interest from big clubs all over Europe this summer. German giants Bayern Munich had looked favorites to land the Chile star, but the likes of Juventus, Inter and Arsenal are all reportedly ready to pay big money to sign the 24-year-old. Bayern’s sporting director has ruled out a move for the player to another German side, but says his club are willing to listen to offers and believes the midfielder’s international displays in Argentina this month will raise his price tag even higher.
