Human rights activist, Mr Femi Falana has accused immediate governor of Borno State Mallam Modu Sheriff of not being truthful in his denial last week of creating the Boko Haram.
Falana who said that the former governor appointed a member of the sect Alhaji Buju Foi as his Commissioner for Religious Affairs during his tenure argued in his statement that Alhaji Foi’s principal brief was the implementation of Sharia which the former governor had illegally proclaimed in a secular state. He also submitted that Modu Sheriff should be prosecuted for alleged extra-judicial killing of the sect leaders.
According to Falana, “in reacting to the allegation of instigating culpable homicide of the three unarmed citizens ex-governor Sheriff has apologized and begged for forgiveness.
In view of the foregoing, ex-governor Modu Sheriff should be arrested and charged with culpable homicide on the basis of his apology. If he is convicted his defence counsel may then apologize and ask the trial judge to temper justice with mercy at the stage of allocotus. But for now Alhaji Sheriff’s apology ought to be rejected by the traumatized people of Nigeria .
If he continues to dissociate himself from the criminal activities of the Boko Haram sect Alhaji Sheriff should disclose to Nigerians the basis of his apology to the group”.
