CALABAR – Ministries and schools in Cross River State remained closed, yesterday, despite the calling off of the proposed warning strike by labour leaders over the non-implementation of the approved minimum wage.

Although the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, had called off the three-day warning strike in the early hours of yesterday, the information did not get to the civil servants in Cross River early enough.

All the public schools and ministries in the state remained closed, while activities at commercial banks were at the lowest ebb with only few customers visiting the banks for transaction.

In Delta State, workers reported to their various offices in Asaba, the state capital, yesterday, following the suspension of the strike.

However, few of the workers were not available because they had travelled out of the town. Commercial activities went on smoothly.

The decision to call off the planned strike by organised labour was received with mixed feelings by workers in the state, particularly civil servants in Port Harcourt.

The streets of Port Harcourt and the state secretariat were practically empty, while some private businesses did not open until 9.30am.
