It was thrills and frills at the 2011 DSTV Final 8 basketball championships at the Indoor Sports Hall of the national stadium, Lagos Wednesday, as underdogs Yelwa Hawks caused a major upset with a 74-73 points victory over the defending champions, Kano Pillars. The victory over Pillars has put a dent in Pillars’ title defence bid.
Pillars who began the match as clear favourites could not re-enact the form that saw them defeat Lagos crowd pullers, Dodan Warriors in the opening day as they went down to their Savannah Conference rivals.
It was indeed a thrilling battle that kept the numerous fans that thronged the sports hall on the edges of their seats throughout.
In the second match, Kada Stars of Kaduna recorded their second straight victory to advance to the semi final with one match on hand. The Sani Turi tutored side overwhelmed Bauchi Nets 67-64 in the second match of day 2.
After the victory, a proud Sani Turi said a continental ticket was in sight. “I think we played a tougher match today because we came from the same conference.
My joy is that we have qualified for the semi final and very close to securing a continental ticket. That has been our prayer,” he said.
The championship continues today with Dodan Warriors taking on Yelwa Hawks, Bauchi Nets vs Comets and Union Bank against Kada Stars. Pillars will host Royal Hoopers in the last match of the day.
