Obinna Metu and Damola Osayomi easily won the men and women 200m in the final day of the Cross River All Nigeria Championships. Both athletes were at the losing end in the 100m decided on the first day of the competition and they were not happy with that result.
But yesterday Metu put up a subdued performance with no credible opposition to chase him down the line. He said that winning the 200m made up for the loss in the 100m where he and Ogho-Oghene Egwero were locked in a photo finish.
“Deep in my mind I’m still convinced that I won that 100m. However, I have decided to let it go.” Metu said. He finished 20.84 seconds to beat Elvis Ukale (with 21. 22) and Fred Agbaje who posted 21.32 seconds.
Osayomi had to come from behind to out shine Gloria Asumnu in the women race. She finished 23.33 to beat Asumnu (22. 47 second s) and Endurance Abinuwa who did 23.58.
In other results Blessing Okagbare posted her season’s best of 6.78m in the women long jump. She beat Comfort Onyali and Otonye Iworima who leapt 6.57m and 5.87m respectively.
In the men’s event Stanley Gbagbeke jumped with pain to achieve 7.90m to beat closest rival Shola Anota to the second position. Anota the golden league jackpot co-winner jumped 7.74m.
