LASWA introduces water transport to Lagos students

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) recently took students from secondary schools across the state on a tour of its waterways with a view to introducing them to water transport in Lagos state.

Speaking to Vanguard during the tour, LASWA’s Managing Director Mr Yinka Marinho said that the water transport in Lagos has become part of the integrated transport system that is being put in place bt the State Government to make movement within and around the city and its metropolises easier for Lagosians.

The LASWA boss who received the finalists of the ‘Be road friendly’ competition amongst secondary schools in Lagos State also stated that the tour was part of education for the competitors.

“The idea is to introduce students to the possibilities of water transportation and all the effort being done to create the awareness of using the water ways as a means of transportation in Lagos”

he stated

Mahinho noted that quite a good number of people in Lagos have phobia for water adding that the authority is trying all it can to erase the fear for water.

He however advocated the introduction of swimming lessons into the curriculum of the schools in Lagos state because swimming itself is a great sport and a great way to recreate.

Speaking in similar vain, the senior special adviser on transport to the Governor, Mrs Mariam Masha said that the students who went on the tour are the waters.

Masha explained that the programme was launched in 2009 adding that the idea was to begin to train children on traffic safety in their very early age.

She said “This educational tour is part of the ‘Be road Friendly’ initiative, the school traffic safety advocacy programme and the children that are here to day are the finalists of the 2011 edition.

“What they are doing is a transport educational tour around Lagos to see and show them that Lagos is working, they have been to other agencies under the ministry of transportation to see the different types of modes of transport that are in the state as part of the activities building up to the finals of the competition”
