The Hawks of Togo yesterday stunned Nigeria’s second string Super Eagles with a hard fought 3-2 victory in the final of the WAFU Nations Cup decided at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta before a sparse crowd of supporters.
The Togolese showed from the blast of the whistle that they were not in Nigeria to admire the Nigerian team handled by Samson Siasia as they powered to a 2-0 lead before the Nigerians rallied to cancel the lead and level up 2-2.
The Togolese would however not relent as they pressured the Eagles more and in one of the rallies, an attacker fired a canon which goalkeeper Sunday Rotimi punched into his own net to the chagrin of his team-mates to shoot Togo ahead again.
With both sides reduced to 10 men each, the tempo remained high with the Togolese, who despatched Ghana and Liberia on their way to the final, showing more determination to carry the day as the Nigerians missed targets on end.
With four minutes injury time added, new kid on the block, Ekigho Ehiosun who scored in almost all the matches before the final headed in a cross after beating the goalkeeper but his effort hit the upright and the lurking Togolese goalkeeper cuddled the rebound.
With the victory, Togo took home the top prize of $25,000 while Nigeria and Liberia who shocked Ghana 3-1 in the third place match got $15,000 and $10,000 respectively.
