Brazil icon Pele has admitted he is concerned about the claims of corruption involving the Fifa Executive Committee members that have put the integrity of football in question.
His comments relate to those made by ex-FA chairman Lord Triesman last week, after he publicly alleged that four members of Fifa’s Ex-Co were prepared to accept financial bribes in return for awarding votes in favour of England’s 2018 World Cup bid.
Unsurprisingly, it has brought the sport’s governing body into dispute, and these fears have been spearheaded by the footballing great himself in a press conference aired on Eurosport.
“The comment [about bribery] isn’t a good one, but it’s a very important comment for football because when you speak about corruption and talk about buying titles and those sort of things, I don’t think it’s very good for the sport,” said Pele, after being asked for his opinion by reporters.
The questions then proceeded to the topic of the governance of football in Brazil, and the many problems that face its administration. The head of Brazil’s FA, Ricardo Teixeira, was one of the Ex-Co members accused by Triesman of seeking financial and sporting favours for his vote.
“It seems to me that the Brazilian administration has a lot of problems, and it’s a shame because we just cannot afford not to function to our full potential,” continued Pele.
“When you speak about football, Brazil is the capital of football, so we need a great organisation, an organisation that’s perfect.”
