Owerri tribunal receives 14 election petitions

A total number of 14 election petitions have been filed before a three-member Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in High Court 5, at the High Court premises, Owerri.

Speaking during its inaugural session, the Tribunal Chairman, Hon. Justice Umoekeyo Essang, said the Tribunal does not enjoy the luxury of time and called for the cooperation of political parties, media practitioners, lawyers and their clients.

“The Tribunal has limited time at its disposal to deliberate on all petitions filed before it and deliver judgment in writing before 180 days from the date the petition was filed”, Essang said.

He appealed to lawyers and their clients to familiarize themselves with the enabling statutes and warned that frivolous applications for adjournment would not be entertained.

Meanwhile, the Tribunal has granted the application in the motion ex-parte for substituted service filed by Kenneth Agbakwuru against Chief Raphael Nnanna Igbokwe in respect of Ahiazu/Ezinihitte federal constituency.
