AWKA-Students’ Union Government, SUG, of Anambra State University, ANSU, yesterday, intervened in the present logjam between the students and authorities of the institution, urging their colleagues to pay the recently approved fees in order not to disrupt the academic calendar.
Fees payable in the institution were increased from about N33,000 per session to N86,000 for returning students and N129,000 for new students. Apart from the new students who paid before their registration formalities, most of the old students have refused to pay, despite pleas by authorities of the university.
It was gathered that the refusal of the students to pay their school fees was almost grinding activities in the institution to a halt, leading to non-payment of workers’ salaries.
Worried by the mounting tension in the university, the SUG president, Mr. Paul Okafor, urged the students to pay the fees to prevent the institution from going back to the dark days of strike by workers.
He said: “We are not taking sides with either the students or management, but we are appealing that there should be peace so that our university won’t be closed down again.
“We are all aware that the management of our university signed an undertaking with the National Universities Commission, NUC, that everything possible should be done to avoid further loss of time.”
