ENUGU -THREE unidentified assailants yesterday visited the residence of Vanguard correspondent in Enugu, Mr. Tony Edike, and left a handwritten letter threatening to kill him.
The visit by the unidentified men is coming a month after one “Gen Poto” sent three text messages to him and two other Enugu-based journalists threatening to deal with them over their activities in the state, which he claimed had been reported to his cartel by the highest authority. The correspondents of THISDAY and Guardian Newspapers in Enugu, Christopher Isiguzo and Lawrence Njoku respectively, received the same threat messages.
The assailants, who drove to the correspondent’s residence in an unmarked car, yesterday, inquired about his whereabouts and when they were told he traveled out of town, they handed the letter to the security man at the gate.
Narrating the incident after reporting the matter to the police, Mr. Edike said, “for the second time within a month, unknown persons today, March 21, 2011, visited my residence in Enugu with a threat to kill me for no reason.
“I got a call from my residence while on an official assignment at the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu at 12.15 pm informing me that three fierce-looking assailants came to the house in a dark and unmarked Mercedes Benz 190 at exactly 12 noon requesting to see me.
”The security man they met at the gate told them that I was not available, they handed over a letter in a brown envelop to him for onward delivery to me and obtained my telephone number with which they promised to reach me.
“On receipt of the letter, I noticed that the assailants’ visit had evil motive as they threatened to kill me without giving any reason for the plot.”
