THE police yesterday rescued one Jerry Ugwu and his five-year-old daughter who were abducted by a gang of kidnappers from their Abakpa-Nike residence in Enugu last Saturday.
Ugwu and his daughter identified as Lotachukwu, were abducted while driving into their compound Saturday night by the five armed kidnappers who had trailed them to the place and immediately took them to an unknown place.
Following their abduction, according to Enugu State Police Spokesman, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, the kidnappers made several phone calls to members of Ugwu’s family demanding a ransom of N50 million as a condition for their release.
He said that the ransom was later reduced to N30 million but the amount was not paid to the hoodlums before the police clamped down on them and rescued the victims from a bush in Awka, Anambra State.
“Mr. Jerry Ugwu and his five-year-old daughter were kidnapped while driving in a Toyota Celica to their Abakpa residence Saturday night. The five-man gang took them to unknown place from where they have been demanding a ransom of N50 million which they later reduced to N30 million. But while they were still demanding the payment, our men caught up with them.
“They were successfully rescued from a bush at Awka, Anambra State today and they are hale and hearty,” Amaraizu said.
He disclosed that four members of the gang including an Electrical and Electronics graduate of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka and a female (names withheld) have been arrested, adding that they would be charged to court after ongoing investigations into their criminal activities.
