Iffy Onuora the head coach of the Ethiopian national team on Monday began preparing his team for the Nations Cup qualifiers against the Eagles on March 27.
This is with the aim of causing an upset in Abuja, a result, which will better their chances of qualifying for the tournament billed for Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
The Ethiopians who were champions in 1962 are tied on three points with Nigeria on the log, having lost only one game just like the Eagles to group leaders Guinea.
Nigeria has the edge on a superior goal difference.
Ethiopia were trashed 4-1 at home, but they went to Antananarivo to beat Madagascar 1-0. With this they are hoping to pull a similar upset against Siasia’s Eagles in Abuja.
The Nigerian-born Onuora is under mandate to qualify Ethiopians to the Nations Cup, which they last participated in 1982. They crashed out in the first round.
“It has been a long time since we played in the Nations Cup. And we have the chance of participating in 2012, if we do well against Nigeria, if we can get a draw that will be better for us,” said an official of the Ethiopian Football Federation.
He added that coach is working hard with the 20 players, who officially started their training on Monday.
