Labourer in court for kidnapping

 Ilorin – A 25-year-old labourer, Mohammed Sambo, was Wednesday, arraigned before an Ilorin Magistrates’ Court for kidnapping.

The accused was charged on a one count-charge of kidnapping, contravening Section 274 of the Penal Code Law.

According to the charge sheet, Sambo on March 11, allegedly kidnapped one Mohammed Bello, 14, at Kare Market, Jebba in Moro Local Government Area of Kwara.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Bilikis Adu, told the court that the offence committed by the accused  was not bailable, hence he should be remanded.

Adu urged the court to adjourn the case for mention to enable the police conclude its investigations.

She also prayed the court to remand  the accused in prison custody till the next adjournment.

Magistrate Kalejaiye Yahaya said “although the offence was not ordinarily bailable, but I’m inclined to use the court’s discretional power in favour of the accused as there was no concrete evidence to establish that the accused committed the alleged offence”.

He, therefore, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N50, 000 and two sureties in like sum.

 He, however, added that if the bail conditions were not met, the accused should be remanded in prison till April 7.
